Scotland’s First Minister Rt. Hon. Alex Salmond and Modern Scottish Cuisine

September 28, 2012

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with the Rt. Honourable Alex Salmond and the very lovely Mrs. Salmond at an event hosted by the Scottish Development office in Chicago.

Mr. Salmond delivered a very touching speech focused on the food and drink industry in Scotland and how important it is to the Scottish economy. As many of you may know Scotland is abundant with great foods. In Mr. Salmonds words, “Scotland has a world class larder.”
I could not agree more. I take it to heart when the First Minister spoke of the need to share these foods with as many in the world as possible. The necessity for helping change the perception of Scottish food and cookery is one that I personally have taken on.
I explained my story to the First Minister which is now a book published by Dunrobin Publishing entitled Ginger; A Boy’s Journey from Scotland to the White House. He was so excited to hear more about the book that he invited me to visit with him on my next trip to Scotland which is in two weeks time and share the book with him in the parliament building in Holyrood.
Also during the conversation I shared my thought on Modern Scottish Cuisine and he could not agree more that Scotland needs to take its food to the next level. I was incredibly excited to hear his positive response to my thoughts and the work that I am currently doing on innovating a trendy cuisine that will open a new domestic push for the foods and flavours from Scotland.
I was very excited to gain Mr. Salmonds interest in my work and he and his wife have invited me to cook this modern cuisine for them to try.
As I write this entry, I am devising my menu. I will have an abundance of fresh Scottish ingredients while in Edinburgh and very much looking forward to the First Minister’s thoughts on what I can do to help make Scotland as delicious to everyone as it is to me.
